On Vista, open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd.exe into the Search box on the Start menu and pressing Ctrl-Shift- Enter. Next, enter this command:

Was having a play with the Windows 7 Open Search Provider. I’ve knocked one together for twitter, it’s only a ‘general term’ search, might have a look at hooking other search types into it, but that’s for later.

If you want it, just download it and either open from the download or double click it and Windows 7 will ask permission to add the search provider.

Any issues let me know. (oh you might have to right click and save as the file and make sure the file extension is osdx)

Speed Up Browsing
When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that TCP/IP really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows XP have a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below:

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimize:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer
REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

REMOVE ANNOYING DELETE CONFIRMATION MESSAGES

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine 'feel' faster. I hate the annoying 'are you sure?' messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:

1. Right-click on the 'Recycle Bin' on the desktop and then click 'Properties'

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation Dialog' check box and click 'Ok'

If you do accidently delete a file don't worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and 'Restore' the file.

Two Terabyte SD cards (COMING SOON!)

Question: What would you do with a 2TB SD card, a card of such voluminous capacity that you can hear cathedral-like echoes clanging around any MP3 file stored upon it?
To help you decide, here are some numbers: 100 HD movies, 480 hours of HD video recording, 136,000 "fine mode" photos, and enough MP3 files to last the rest of your life (this last is according to my poor math).
So, what would you do? the answer is, of course, lose it. And if it was the even smaller MicroSD card pictured, you'd lose it even quicker. Imagine dropping your entire photo collection down the drain when swapping out cards from the camera. Shiver.
Of course, you can't buy a 2TB card right now. Instead, SDXC is the new spec from the SD Association which allows a theoretical maximum of 2TB, meaning the way has been opened for manufacturers to offer bigger and bigger memory cards for cameras. It is also quick, with a current maximum transfer speed of 104 MB per second, rising to 300 MB per second when the kinks are worked out. Compare that to the 200x speed SD card which gives a comparatively pathetic 30 MB per second.
So, relax. By the time 2TB is actually affordable, you're camera will be recording 100 megapixel HDR images every time you click the shutter, so you'll probably only fit 100 photos on a card anyway.

(2)Cool DOS Commands
Command #1: By typing in 'tree' into Dos, you can view all of the folders (not files) on the computer or User. Pretty cool but then again pretty worthless. Just a cool thing to know.

Command #2: By typing in 'ipconfig' you can view your default gateway ip adress for your router. This is really only useful if you are good with the computer and are trying to fix your internet connection, you can look at what's wrong.

Command #3: By typing in 'format c:' you can delete all the information on your hard drive, if you want to start new or something, but dont do that just to be an idiot.

Command #4: By typing in 'netstat' or 'nbtstat' (both similar) you can view the TCP/IP

Ever wanted to rename your recycle bin? Who wouldn't?
Well, it's pretty simple, the bare bones of it are just typing in commands to the registry.
Ok, what you do is, copy this information (in bold) to notepad or something similar. (Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Notepad).

Speed up your Windows Vista system in minutes

It has been quite some time since the Windows Vista, the long awaited operating system from Microsoft, was released. Vista offers a rich, secure and user friendly environment. Despite of all these bells and whistles, Vista tends to slow down you system, even if you meet the recommended system requirements. If you were thinking of upgrading your hardware before switching to Windows Vista, think again. This guide will help you tweak Vista to run super fast on your existing hardware.

Why is Vista too slow?
Vista slows down even systems that are way above the recommended requirements. Such problems are noticeable when you run graphic intensive applications like games etc. There are two main reasons for this. One is lots of services loaded in your RAM.
If you have 1GB RAM it gets limited to 512 MB due to all the services loaded in the rest 512 MB. Gamers get a low FPS as Vista consumes 32MB of graphics memory itself.
One easy but expensive solution is to upgrade to more memory. Other solution is to disable the “services” running in the background. This guide will help you optimize your system performance for Windows Vista.

Use ReadyBoost

With Vista you can use your USB drive to improve performance. It does not increase the physical memory (RAM), but it serves as a cache. Hard drives are a very show medium as compared with the contemporary USB drives, the reason is that USB drive is a circuit (direct access) and hard drive involves rotational motion. ReadyBoost caches the disk reads so it can retrieve data quickly when needed. ReadyBoost also encrypts the cached data for privacy concerns.
It is recommended that size of USB drive should be equal to that of main memory (RAM). If you have 1GB RAM than go for a 1GB USB. Choose a USB with higher read/write speeds. For example Kingston Migo and Elite have much higher speeds. Such small factors can really boost performance to much larger extent. Do not use a USB drive with less than 64 MB memory or read/write speed below 3 MB/s.
To use ReadyBoost for making Vista perform super fast, follow the procedure:

Plug-in your USB drive
Windows will show a message to either use it as an external drive or as ReadyBoost drive. If no window is displayed then right click and select the ReadyBoost tab manually. If there is no such tab then your USB drive is not compatible with this technology.
Choose ReadyBoost.
You can also change the amount of space to be used for ReadyBoost.
Click the OK button to finalize.

Disable the Indexing Service
Indexing services in Windows Vista indexes all the files and folders for faster access. It basically makes search function faster. By default all files are indexed, but you probably won’t need that. It is recommended that you should disable the indexing service on all the items other than the start menu. To speed up Vista, follow these steps:

Select Start and type "index options", without quotations
After the Indexing Options are loaded, click the Modify button.
Then click Show all Locations
A list of locations will be displayed in the form of a tree. Uncheck those folders which you do not want to be indexed. You can also use the Advanced button to specify file types to be indexed, but this part is optional.
Click OK button to finalize.

Enable advanced write caching
Vista comes with built-in support for SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives. By default Vista does not enable write caching. To improve your data retrieval speed you must enable the write caching. Just follow these steps:

Go to the hard drive properties
Select the Policies tab
Select the radio button labeled Optimize for performance.
Check the boxes titled “Enable write caching on the disk” and “Enable Advance Performance”
Click OK button to finish.

Speed up Start Menu Search
The search option in Vista is very handy. It lets you search pictures, emails, documents, control panel and the start menu itself. To tweak performance you should narrow down the search space. To improve performance, follow the simple procedure:

Place mouse pointer on Start button and right click
From the menu select Properties option
Click on the Customize button
If the Search Communications option is checked then uncheck it.
Click OK buttons to commit the changes.

Disable Unwanted Startup Services
The good old MSCONFIG option is available in Vista as well. Lots of crappy programs load at boot time which consume large amount of memory and processor. To tweak follow these steps:

Go to Start>Run or press Windows + R
Type “msconfig” and click OK
The System Configuration dialogue box will be displayed, select the Startup
You will see list of checkboxes, most of them will be checked. Uncheck those ones which are not needed. More unchecked boxes will lead to better performance.
Click OK button to finish this tweaking step.

Tweak the Side Bar

Vista comes with lots of bells and whistles. Side Bar is one cool looking component of Vista’s interface. The Side bar provides easy access to the gadgets you install. To improve overall performance I recommend you to disable this feature or at least use those gadgets that are extremely important. By applying this performance tweak you will free lots on Memory and processing power. To improve performance, just follow these steps:

Position your mouse pointer on the Side Bar and Right Click
Click on the Properties option
In the menu uncheck the box titled Start Side Bar When Windows Starts
Click the OK button. From now on the bar won’t be loaded on startup.

Tweak Aero: Disable Transparency
Aero is the default theme for Vista. Although the theme looks pretty cool buts it is a resource hog for your hardware. You have to modify its settings to make it run well on your system.

You can remove transparency in Vista to boost performance. Just follow the steps:

While on the desktop, Right Click
Select the Personalize option
Click the “Windows Color and Appearance” option
Uncheck the box “Enable transparency”
Press OK button to finish.

Tweak Aero:
Fine Tune Flip 3D To tweak Vista performance you can also fine tune the Flip 3D option available in Aero. Flip 3D feature lets you switch between windows by pressing Alt + Tab repeatedly. This feature is very intuitive, but it’s too costly for your hardware

To speed up Flip 3D, just follow these steps:

Select Start>Run
Type the command “regedit” without quotations and press OK button
Registry Editor Window will show up
Before going any further I recommend you to make a backup of your registry. Use the
File>Export option in the Registry Editor window
Go to the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>DWM.
While DVM is selected right click to create a new DWORD
Assign any value between 4 and 9 to the newly created key. You can play around with different values to get most of your hardware without sacrificing much of cool looking interface.
Reboot to finalize.

Tweak Aero: min-max animation
In Vista, Aero theme also offers animation of windows while they are minimized or maximized. To speed up performance you have to follow the simple procedure:

In the Start menu type “SystemPropertiesPerformance” and press enter button.
In the window go to Visual Effects tab
Uncheck the box with label Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing.
Finally press OK button.

You will definitely feel the difference in Vista performance after completing this tweak. Stop extra services There are lots of services that are automatically started by default in Vista. Many such services are of no use for the user. There are services that get automatically added to the list when you install different third party software. They consume lots of RAM and processor. To speed up just follow these steps:

Go to Start>Run and type “msconfig” without quotations.
System Configuration window will be displayed.
Go to the Services tab (middle one)
To be on the safe side check the box “Hide all Microsoft Services”
Now you will have a reduced version of the list, select ones that you feel are unnecessary.
Press OK to finish.

There are some Windows Vista’s services that you can disable without any glitch:

Windows Error Reporting
Tablet PC Input Service ( don’t disable if you are using a tablet PC)
Remote Registry
Offline Files
IKE and AuthIP IP Keying Modules

Increase Internet Explorer 7 downloads
By default Internet Explorer 7 restricts user from downloading more than two files from the same server. In vista you can tweak IE settings to get maximum downloads, follow these steps:

Start>Run and type regedit to open the Registry Editor
Navigate to the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Internet
Look for a key named “MaxConnectionsPerServer”
Right click to modify it.
Assign it a decimal value larger than 2 (it’s the max download limit, by default its 2)
Similarly perform the same operation for “MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server”
Restart your computer

Disable Network Printer Search
Disabling network printer search may greatly improve Vista’s performance. When you browse through folders Vista is always looking for network printers. This search ends up in consuming lots of resources. To speed up performance just follow these steps:

While you are in the explorer (My Computer), go to the Tools menu
Select Folder options
Go to the View tab
Uncheck the box named “Automatically search for network printers” After completing this step you would certainly feel the difference.

Defragment Frequently
Vista’s defragmentation is the last thing to do tweak performance. Defragmentation procedure basically removes empty spaces and arranges similar files in a sequential manner for faster access. Interface of Vista’s default defragmenter is pathetic. You can look for third party software like Diskeeper if you want a better and intuitive user interface. If you defragment once in a while you will certainly feel the difference.

How to change the favicon of your blog

What is a favicon

Favicon is abbreviation for website icon. If you have not done anything to your blog template, the address bar of your blog may look like what you see below:

The favicon in the screenshot above is the standard Blogger favicon and this will be the favicon for all blogspot.com blogs by default. :The favicon will also be seen in tabs of web browsers with tab browsing . See the screen shot below:

If you want your own favicon, these are the steps to put your own favicon into a Blogger or any blog.

Backup your template and backup the Page Elements
Convert an image file (jpg, png, gif, etc.) into an image with a .ico extension. Google for "free ico generator" or try this one. It is the best I found so far:

All you need to do is to sign up for a free account (I think if you don't want to, this may not even be necessary), click "browse" and select an image from your computer.

Upload, and that generator will not only generate the .ico image for you, at the same time it will host the .ico image on the web and give you the .ico image URL in the same page. In fact, it does better than that. It gives you the code for you to copy-paste into your blog template:
Go to Dashboard and get into the LAYOUT of the blog you want a favicon for. Click EDIT HTML and look for . fix for "missing favicon" . Paste the code you get from above and preview. If everything OK, click "Save" and your blog will have a favicon different from the standard Blogger favicon.

Turn Your Vista Notebook Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot

One thing you should know about me: I'm no fan of Windows Vista. Some things about it just annoy me to death, like the unnecessary overhaul of certain interface elements. That said, Vista has a few features I positively love, starting with connection sharing. In other words, you can turn your Internet-connected notebook into a Wi-Fi hotspot for others to share.

This can come in mighty handy if you're the only one in your group with, say, a wireless modem or wired Ethernet connection. Here's how to set it up:

1. Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center.

2. Click Set up a connection or network.

3. Click Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network, and then click Next.

4. Enter a name for your network, choose a security type (WEP is probably fine, given that you're sharing your network with people you know), and then enter a security key.

5. Check the Save this network box, then click Next.

6. If you see a box marked Turn on Internet Connection Sharing, go ahead and click it.

That's it! Now you should be able to share your connectivity with other users within about a 30-foot range.

How to convert your PC into a Mac

So, you wanna make your ugly Windows XP interface look like Mac OS X, huh? It’s really not all that difficult to do, and with a little luck, you’ll be able to convince all but the most die-hard Mac users that you run an Apple computer. First, here’s a list of the programs you’ll need

* StyleXP or WindowBlinds (skins the Graphical User Interface of your operating system)
* ObjectBar (the white Finder bar on the top of Macs; has File, Edit, View, etc. on it.)
* ObjectDock, YzDock (discontinued), or MobyDock (The dock on the bottom of a Mac that contains icons and shortcuts to programs)
* Trillian (chat program that can be skinned to resemble iChat)
* YzToolbar (skins the toolbar icons in your Windows windows)
* YzShadow (puts a lovely drop shadow under your windows á la Mac OS X)
* Rainlendar (popular skinable desktop calendar)
* Rainmeter (skinnable desktop system statistics)
* Samurize (like Konfabulator for the Mac; can display just about anything, such as clocks, uptime, and the weather)
* iTunes for Windows (self-explanatory)
* Icons (The pretty little pictures on your desktop that point you somewhere. There are millions out there, but try the link provided for over a 1,000 lifted from Mac OS X 10.3 aka Panther)

That’s pretty much what you’ll want for starters. You don’t need all of these, and in fact, you really only need a few to get a reasonably good looking OS X facsimile, but if you’re gonna do this you might as well do it right. Now on to the guide.

This guide assumes that you have either downloaded/purchased the programs listed and 0that you know your way around a computer, at least to a reasonable extent.

1) I use StyleXP for my visual style, so that’s what I’ll detail here. WindowBlinds isn’t that different, but if you prefer it, be my guest. The first thing you’ll need to do is download a skin. I recommend Kol’s website, StudioTwentyEight for some excellent skins, but feel free to look around for any others that might interest you. Download your ZIP, and extract it to C:WINDOWSResourcesThemes. Open up StyleXP and load up that baby. Your windows should now look like the skin you downloaded. If you chose Panther (an excellent choice) then they should look somewhat like this:

2) Time to find a good ObjectBar skin. I’d suggest crni’s website for some excellent themes. Download the one you like best and extract it to your ObjectBar folder. Open the new folder in there (named something like the theme you downloaded) and double-click the .OBTHEME icon. The top of your screen should now look something like this, depending on your theme (Milk for me):

3) Next up is the dock. Open up whichever version you settled on downloading. This is pretty easy to set up. Basically all you need to do is drag shortcuts or executables to the dock and ta da, you have a shortcut. To change it’s icon, right-click and select “change icon” or some variation. To get new icons to select, make sure you put them in the icons subfolder (for YzDock) or the main dock folder (for ObjectDock). Easy as pie. When you have the icons and programs you like, it should look something like this:

trillian4) For those that don’t know, Trillian is a nifty chat program that sticks AIM, MSN, ICQ, and IRC into one program. If you don’t use it, you should if for no other reason that it can look a lot like iChat. You may or may not need the Pro version to get the skin to work. I’ve heard mixed reports, but if it doesn’t work right, I’d say you need the Pro version. An excellent choice for skins are Danimator’s iChat skins. Extract it to your Trillian skin directory, open up Trillian’s preferences, go to skins, and select the new skin you want to use. You can follow the readme for some more precise directions to get it looking perfect. When you’re done, it should look like this:

5) YzToolbar and YzShadow are pretty self-explanatory. Just install ‘em and run ‘em. You can find good YzToolbar skins on the net: I’d recommend Aqua-Soft or AquaXP. Depending on skin (Milk, for me) and settings, it should look something like this:

6) Rainlendar and Rainmeter are also pretty easy to install and set-up. Just run the installer, and find a good skin. Again, there’s many to choose from. I’d suggest searching the forums at the aforementioned Aqua-Soft and AquaXP. Here’s the Rainlender skin I use.

OS X7) Samurize is a bit complicated, so if you’re going to try and use it, be forewarned that it can be a very big hassle, if it works at all. I’m not even going to try and explain it in this brief overview, but if you are serious about it, check out the Samurize forums at Aqua-Soft and AquaXP. Here’s an example of what it can do:

8) If you listen to music on your computer, no Aqua-fication can be complete without the authentic iTunes for Windows. Apple provides plenty of documentation on how to install and use it, so I’ll leave that part to them. If you want to make it look more like iTunes for Macintosh, check out localhost’s multi-plugin.
